The Roscommon Flute Players’ Society

In 2004 the Roscommon Flute Players’ Society was formed to celebrate the role of the flute in the county, to encourage its development and to promote its uniqueness worldwide.

In late 2004 they successfully developed and released The Flute Players of Roscommon Volume 1 and the second volume was launched at the Willie Clancy Summer School last July. On this CD there are 23 tracks featuring a mixture of new recordings and archive material.

Some of the artists involved are internationally recognised, others are known widely but previously unrecorded, and some are emerging players. A core feature of the programme is that the musicians enthusiastically agreed that they would not receive any royalties. All the proceeds will help to further the Society’s work to purchase flutes for young musicians, finance young musicians’ participation in summer schools throughout the country and set up an online archive collection.

This year at RtCT, we'll hear music from a selection of those involved with the Roscommon Flutes project.
