Brian Rooney and Pete Quinn

Brian Rooney

Born in Derragoon, county Leitrim, Brian Rooney originally played the harmonica, tin whistle and accordion. At age thirteen, his sister bought him a fiddle – he’d found his instrument.

Brian moved to London in the early 1970s, where he met with other great émigré Irish musicians like Jimmy Power, Danny Meehan and Bobby Casey. He became one of the most influential figures on the London traditional scene, earning the nickname ‘The Godfather’. A modest and unassuming man, Brian was encouraged by friends to record an album and his 1999 debut release, The Godfather, was quickly hailed as a classic. His follow up release, Leitrim to London (Claddagh Records), received great critical acclaim. Brian has a strikingly individual and elegant style of playing. Impeccable timing and intonation coupled with a wonderful, understated ‘swing’ reminds you that, while the melodies are indeed beautiful, this is dance music first and foremost. He’s always been respected for his generosity - most London-based Irish musicians cite Brian as a significant influence – and visiting players have made a point of seeking him out to enjoy his company and to learn from him. In recent years, Brian has suffered health problems. We are delighted that he is recovered and well enough to give this, his first concert at Return to Camden Town since 2002.

Peter Quinn

Brian will be accompanied on piano by Pete Quinn. Pete hails from Liverpool, is now resident in London and is the accompanist with The London Lasses.
